Biography
Indian actor, philanthropist, playback singer, television presenter and producer, colloquially known as Appu. He was the youngest son of actor and matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar. He was one of the most famous celebrities and one of the highest paid actors in Kannada cinema of his time. [Kannada cinema refers to films in the Kannada language, ie. the language of Indian south-western state Karnataka. This is unrelated to the country Canada.] In a career spanning three decades, he won one National Film Award, four Karnataka State Film Awards, six Filmfare Awards South and five SIIMA awards.
His performances as a child actor in Vasantha Geetha (1980), Bhagyavantha (1981), Bhakta Prahaladha (1983), and Yarivanu (1984) were praised. He won the Karnataka State Award for Best Child artist for Chalisuva Modagalu (1982) and Eradu Nakshatragalu (1983), and he received the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for playing Ramu in Bettada Hoovu (1985).
He appeared as a lead actor in many commercially successful films ranging from Appu (2002) to Gandhada Gudi (2022). In 2012, he debuted as a television presenter on the game show Kannadada Kotyadhipati, a Kannada version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.
Puneeth married Ashwini Revanth on 1 December 1999. They met through a common friend, and had two daughters Drithi and Vanditha. On 29 October 2021, Puneeth complained of uneasiness to his wife, and died on his way to a hospital in Bengaluru at the age of 46 from cardiac arrest. The Karnataka Government conferred the state's highest civilian award, Karnataka Ratna, to Puneeth Rajkumar on 1 November 2022.
